NYISO report OKs two power plant retirements [Video]

Two prospective coal-fired plant closures in Western New York have energy customers worried about the state of their service. However, as an independent study by the New York Independent System Operator confirmed, retiring both Dunkirk and Huntley plants won’t noticeably impact ratepayers through 2020.

Sometimes closing down power plants can help reduce operational costs and improve efficiency, but it could come at the cost of service reliability. Without extra stores of capacity, ratepayers could be left footing energy bills padded with peak demand costs.

Luckily, that doesn’t appear to be the case here. In fact, NYISO stated efficiency upgrades to the regional transmission infrastructure could make up for the lost capacity of at least one of the two facilities.
