Massachusetts lawmakers propose carbon tax [Video]

Green energy technology doesn’t come cheap, which is one of the reasons the commonwealth of Massachusetts has proposed implementing a tax on carbon emissions for regional generators.

Senate bill 1747 outlines a graduated series of tax increases the state hopes will help financially support greener energy initiatives. If passed, the bill would create an immediate ten dollar per ton tax, as well as a framework to add five dollars incrementally the subsequent years until it caps off at forty dollars per ton.

Other states in New England have also made similar considerations, including Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut. These changes could potentially lead to cost increases for generators, impacting the region’s wholesale energy market and most likely raising rates for distributors and end-users.
